Welcome to Ava's TPLO recovery
Ava Post-OpThis is Ava 24 hours after her first TPLO surgery to correct a torn cranial cruciate ligament on her right knee.
One of the most common conditions seen in veterinary orthopaedic medicine is the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury. The CCL in dogs is commonly equated to the ACL in humans. As frequently recommended in humans, surgical intervention is typically needed to return dogs to normal activity and have long lasting soundness of the affected limb. |
Ava Week 1During the first 2 weeks after surgery therapeutic laser treatments are key to reducing inflammation and providing comfort.
Laser therapy accelerates the bodies natural healing process through photo-bio-modulation. Whether your pet is rehabilitating from surgery, trauma or injury, healing from wounds or simply aging, the laser has been shown to provide relief and speed healing. |
Ava Week 2During the recovery phase from an injury or surgery it is important to maintain and improve joint mobility.
Rehabilitation therapy can help improve joint function with range of motion exercises. The goal of these exercises is to gently increase range of motion while decreasing pain, swelling and stiffness. This is Ava having Passive Range of Motion performed on her stifle. |

Ava Week 3Her incision has healed and she's ready for the water!
The underwater treadmill provides low-impact, high-resistance therapy or workouts for rehabilitation from injury or surgery, conditioning and weight loss. It offers a controlled environment to exercise safely. |
Ava Week 4It is now 4 weeks after Ava's TPLO surgery to correct a torn cruciate ligament (CCL) and she continues to improve. Her treatments include therapeutic laser, range of motion exercises, massage and underwater treadmill.
It's time to start challenging her and rebuilding muscle strength by encouraging weight transfer. This particular exercise with the balance disc will strengthen a variety of hind limb muscles while building core strength as well. |
Ava's Recovery Part 2
Many of you followed Ava's recovery from her TPLO surgery to correct a cruciate ligament injury in her right knee. Well......here she is again following TPLO surgery on her left knee.
When we diagnosed her right cruciate injury in January there was radiographic evidence that her left leg had some degree of cruciate injury as well. At that time we performed surgery on the leg that she was experiencing the most discomfort on, the right. She has recovered well from that surgery and as she became more comfortable and less painful on her right leg she became increasingly uncomfortable on her left leg, a normal progression for a dog with bilateral cruciate injuries. This is Ava 3 days post surgery waiting for her therapeutic laser treatment to help decrease inflammation and aid in healing. Don't let that sad face fool you, she is up and walking around and doing very well. Those sad eyes are because she's only had 5 liver treats so far today. |
Ava All Healed Up
Ava had TPLO surgery to repair a torn cruciate ligament in her right knee in January, rehabilitation therapy for 10 weeks and then TPLO surgery on her left knee in May with 10 more weeks of therapy and look at her now.
We are so pleased with how well she is doing.
Enjoying life again, with full function and no discomfort.
