Bone Pinning and Bone Plating

Bone Plating

Bone plating involves attaching a strong metal plate to the outside of a fractured bone using surgical screws. This offers solid, stable support, especially in more complex or weight-bearing fractures where high movement is expected. Plating is often used for larger or very active dogs that need reliable bone healing.

Why it matters: Bone plating provides one of the strongest repair options, helping the bone heal properly and reducing the risk of re-injury. It’s a great option for pets who need to return to an active lifestyle.

This image shows before and after bone plating surgeries in dogs. It highlights different types of fractures and how they were repaired using metal plates and screws. Bone plating is one of the most stable and reliable ways to fix a fracture. It ensures the broken pieces of bone stay in the correct position while the body heals naturally. With proper healing time, many dogs return to full function — walking, running, and playing like normal.

Bone Pinning

Bone pinning is a surgical technique used when a pet has a broken bone, especially in long bones like the leg. A metal pin is inserted into the center of the bone to hold the pieces in place while they heal. This method is often used in younger animals or simple fractures, and in some cases, the pin is removed once healing is complete.

Why it matters: Pinning keeps bones aligned without requiring external casts, promotes healthy healing, and allows your pet to regain full use of the leg.
This type of bone pinning gives your dog the support needed for proper healing, helping to restore mobility and reduce pain. The pin keeps everything steady so the bone can grow back together smoothly, reducing the risk of long-term complications.
